Qalb and Qawl: The Secret of 32
![]() |
In the Qur’an, the qalb is not a symbol of fleeting emotion — it is the vessel of perception, the seat of turning, the site of divine reception. The word qalb (قلب) carries an abjad value of 32.
In the human body, we are given 32 adult teeth.
Why this correspondence?
The qalb receives; it turns meaning inward. The teeth articulate; they form words, chew truth, break it down, or reject it. One takes in, the other releases — together they represent the cycle of inner to outer, the bridge between truth and expression.
This is qalb and qawl — the heart and the word. If they align, you embody truth. If they are split, you speak falsehood.
Allah says:
“We are closer to him than his jugular vein, when the two receivers receive.”
(Qur’an 50:16–17)
Two receivers. Inner and outer. Qalb and qawl.
This is the balance of the prophetic path: to say only what the heart has witnessed.
